Webinar #4 - Teaching Young Learners Online (SpeakArt)

Webinar #4 - Teaching Young Learners online

GPTE students were able to watch a Webinar which was hosted by Ada Chmielewska and Natalia Nesteruk. The webinar hosts are experienced ESL teachers who currently own their own language school entitled SpearkArt.

The webinar was quite interesting as the teachers shared their personal experiences teaching aboard as well as their experience teaching English online. Due to the current pandemic, many schools were forced to move their lessons online. So, the hosts were able to provide reassurance to new teachers by explaining the advantages of teaching online as well as some lesson examples – which were creative and out of the box.

The teachers explained that they try to conduct online lessons similar to physical lessons ( AKA in a real classroom). As, they both need to build relationships with parents, and students, provide a community support system, and provide online learning goals. The speakers tried to make us see the bright side of online lessons, such as no commuting time for teachers, the development of children computer skills as well as the blessed mute all button.

When conducting lessons online, they recommended to differentiate the types of activities online. Generally, every lesson should include three things such as: personal interactions in front of the camera via the use of realia and props, online materials (via share screen mode), and hands-on activities.

The two hosts also shared some ideas and tips to use while conducting lessons online.

My favourite was the use of online websites such as EarthCam, to analyze the different weather conditions in different places in the world e.g. in France vs. Spain.

I enjoyed that the ladies mentioned that we can still use pre-made materials from our physical (in-class) lessons, such as the use of flashcards (flashcard games), realia and of course reading story books to students.

I really enjoyed this webinar as it gave a lot of insight on conducting online lessons with young learners.
