Student practice: Teaching materials

                                                    Student practice: Teaching materials

Teaching aids and materials are one of the most important tools that every teacher should have a multitude of in their back pocket. They have an effective impact of students’ learning, comprehension and building their knowledge on a particular concept or topic. Materials facilitate students’ learning process which aids learners to grow and deepen their understanding.

I have noticed that teachers at this school rarely use course books in the classroom. They occasionally use the maths course book, but not all the time. Instead, the teachers use a number of authentic materials from the internet or from other places such as YouTube and even create their own. The teachers also adapted materials to fit the abilities of the learners. The teacher uses the website – twinkl for additional materials such as a reading activity, or maths worksheets. The best thing about this website is that it provides different levels of a worksheet to fit the different needs of learners.

For the majority of the class, the teacher provides a lot of hand-on work. Such as completing an experiment, or complete a maths problem on their whiteboards and much more. I find that with the different levels of cognitive levels in the classroom, the teacher can easily match a worksheet or task to fit learners’ abilities. The activities are also varied as most of the time, it requires partner or group work and other times, individual work. This variety also help the student to be motivated, encourage active learning, and develop key critical-thinking, communication, and decision-making skills. It enables students to gather their ideas and see problems or solutions from a different perspective.

It was interesting to see how the head teacher conducted lessons in class and above all, how the students were able to adequately absorb information. I found that my years at a public school, the teacher replied heavily on completing the course book.

Let me know your thoughts about this is the comment section,
